i haaaate this weather. my school is a sauna - very hard to find teacher appropriate clothing that is comfortable enough for warm, humid weather :(

Actually, Julie, you really don't need a lesson because you are dressed for the hot and humid weather. Only suggestion you'll get from me is invest in a hat to protect you from the rain. Reason I'm saying this is because a Lufkin, Texas woman was killed by lightning on Tuesday night after the thunderbolt hit her umbrella and went straight into the ground at an iHop there.

That's essentially how my mom viewed it. Along with "If those clothes I bought and am allowing you to wear are on the floor when I get back, I will be giving them to the Salvation Army. If you're going to throw my stuff on the floor, I'd rather give it to someone who'd appreciate it."

As an adult, I realize that this approach ate away at my teenaged sense of entitlement. The difference isn't viewing your kids as property or as mini-adults, but rather making sure your kids realize that they haven't earned anything on their own yet. The difference between me and a kid who needed to go to the SA for clothes was just luck of birth. Not sure how well that will work with the Smith kids, since they have their own Money.

I get that he invented it and all, but I absolutely disagree with him. The fact that "GIF" stands for "graphics interchange format" - a HARD "g" - means the people are right and he is wrong. Sorry dude.

Me too. If there is an -e, -i, or -y after the g, it usually sounds like a j.

If there is an -a, -o or -u after the g, it usually sounds like a g.

Examples of a soft g: Bufords Bridge, ginger, Gyro Attack

Examples of a hard g: game, goal, gubernatorial

Sometimes, Ami, et. al., the words are irregular:

Examples of hard g with -e, -i, and -y: gynecology, girl, Gettys Broome (a high school in Converse, S.C.)

I have to say I don't really get it. His rationale seems to be that he'll only treat his children the way he would treat a fellow adult? Your children are not your fellow adults.. they are children. So I just don't get that, and I don't think telling your kid that they should clean their room to gratify you since it's actually yours is respectful or loving.

I guess the question of to what extent your children are/are not your property is really murky. In a legal sense, for all intents and purposes they are, as long as they are a minor in your custody. In another sense they aren't though, because the term "property" seems to indicate the right to do whatever you want with them, which you don't have.

As a parent I see myself not as an owner of property at all, but as the authority in my daughter's life for her good, myself being under the authority of the Lord having been charged to do His will and not my own for her. So from that perspective, she's in no way my property but instead the Lord's, and she's merely been entrusted to my care.

Still, I don't see the connection being releasing that view and treating your child as your bud crashing on your couch or in one of "your" rooms. That's just not the case. Any parent of a child is an authority over them, and as a parent you have the responsibility of teaching them skills, protecting them and guiding them. That's why you interact with them with authority as opposed to your fellow adults, with whom it would be inappropriate.

You shouldn't have to request any of those songs on the $20 list. They should be played anyway. I cannot imagine not hearing "Sweet Caroline" and "Piano Man" as those were staples of my college years.
